What Do What Science Is Telling Us About the Parent We've Overlooked

Do Fathers Matter?: What Science Is Telling Us About the Parent We've Overlooked Paperback – June 2, 2015

This fascinating, clearly written book contains a wealth of information about fathers’ importance to their children—both psychological and biological. Conversely, it explores how children affect their fathers—again both psychologically and biologically. The book should be a must-read for fathers, mothers, family psychologists, and any other professionals who deal with family issues. It should also be a standard text in any course about the family. The author answers the book’s title question “Do Fathers Matter?” with a resounding yes! And he offers the eye-opening evidence to back that answer up. This evidence comes from not only studies involving humans, but those on fathering in monkeys, birds, mice, rats, and voles. When I was reading the book, I marked with sticky notes the information I found most interesting and surprising. I ran out of sticky notes and ended up with a book festooned with them!

A Step-by-Step Guide to Eating Right with Type 2 Diabetes

A Step-by-Step Guide to Eating Right with Type 2 Diabetes

This is a great book for people who are struggling with what they can eat after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. People are typically very confused about what they can eat and think they need to give up all of their favorite foods. The authors provide sound nutrition information in a clear and concise manner and relate it to everyday eating with helpful tips. They also offer nutrition facts plus resources for obtaining additional information if the reader is interested.

What I especially liked is how they incorporated practical information along with the facts. They point out cost and time saving measures when shopping and preparing foods. At the same time that the importance of eating good food to manage type 2 diabetes is emphasized the reader can benefit from their tips about the important role food plays in our lives and the comfort it provides. Reading food labels is broken down into components that are understandable. They encourage the reader to set their own goals and provide reinforcement and encouragement throughout the book. This helps the reader recognize the types of small changes they can make in their food selections to improve their overall health.

I highly recommend this well written book and give kudos to the authors for coming up with the facts, practical tips and great recipes that use readily available ingredients.

What Do What Bae Won't Do: The Next Man Will [Kindle Edition]

I am so glad I had the honor to read this book. Genesis Woods is to be compared to other authors such as Nikki Turner, Eric Jerome Dickey, Mary B. Morrison, Sister Souljah and most defently Whandia Clark. When this book was sent to me from the moment I started reading I couldn't put it down. The suspense keep me on the edge of my seat with every chapter I read. I read What Bae Wont Do: The Next Man Will and Sermaji is out to prove that by any means necessary. Mya is a present day hoe AKA THOT (Thirsty Hoes On Top), Lala is disloyal and doesnt know the true meaning of being a real friend. Jerome is a dog like many men today. So I feel Genesis took what we see everyday in life no matter whether you come from the hood, upscale California or another country. If you read this book and gave it a bad rating then Genesis must of touched on something to close for home! There is no way you read this book and not want to know if Jerome impregnated his girlfriend's best friends Lala? Or if Lil Ray is the baby's father? How will Najair react to the news of finding out that her boyfiend not only slept with her bestfriend but also her cousin? What will happen between Najair and Semaj? Who is Jerome baby mama? Will Jerome and Semaj fight? These are the questions I would like to know the answer too. I cant wait till part two is released.. I am not gonna lie when I read the last chapter and say the To Be Continued I was like WTH.... I have to wait to see what happens next..... Genesis Woods I am loving what I have read so far keep up the good work. Let your Haters be your Motivators!! You could be imspiring someone else to write a book and may have placed that dream onthe shelf til they read your book.

Wish I could give this 10 stars. I discovered this book as a preschooler in 1968. My mom would take me to the local library every week. I checked it out from the library and I was hooked. I wanted to check it out at every visit, so my mom had the library order a copy for me. I remember even before I could read the words, I completely understood the story from the illustrations. I still have that original edition. It is tatered but still intact. I bought another copy this year for my preschool sons. They absolutely love it as well as the other Scarry book I had as a child, Busy Busy World. The newer book is the abridged edition. The abridged edition has 63 pages as compared to the ~95 pages in the original. They removed 4 stories from the original: busy (stay at home) mom, water treatment plants, electricity and how we get it, and Sgt. Murphy the Busytown policeman. Why? Somebody at the publisher must have had a lobotomy. Anyway, we keep the original up in a closet to read only with adult supervision. The new one is on the shelf, readily accesible to the kids.
This book (even the abridged edition) is an absolute classic.

What Do  It's What I Do: A Photographer's Life of Love and War Hardcover – February 5, 2015

Best Book of the Month for February 2015: “Why do you do this?” is the central question Lynsey Addario answers in her new memoir It’s What I Do—and she asks it not just for the reader, but it seems for herself. Addario is a MacArthur “Genius” grant recipient and was part of the team that won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting (covering the Taliban in Afghanistan with Dexter Filkins ) but her story often underscores her insecurities in her profession and personal life. Even with her numerous accolades, she worries about being forgotten, missing the breaking story and not being taken seriously as a woman. It’s a frank, and refreshingly, candid look into a successful professional photojournalist at the top of her game but it never romanticizes the risks that are necessary to bring us her images. Her story is inspiring, heartbreaking and an eye opening look at what it takes to reveal events from the other side of the world. –Amy Huff

“… a codebook for deciphering one of the grand riddles of life: why don’t others see us as we see ourselves? A renowned psychologist charts the path to making a better impression on others while maintaining a sense of integrity.” — Adam Grant, as seen on LinkedIn

ADVANCE PRAISE for No One Understands You and What to Do About It:

Daniel H. Pink, author, To Sell Is Human and Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us
“Think you know how you come across? Think again. Using a brilliant combination of stories and science, Heidi Grant Halvorson reveals the gulf between how others perceive us and how we perceive ourselves. But instead of leaving us to lament, she shows us how to contend with this sometimes harsh reality. This is a smart, fascinating, and eminently practical book.”

Carol S. Dweck, Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology, Stanford University—
“This is a great book. It’s important, it’s riveting, and it’s extremely useful. In fact, it’s essential for anyone who wants to thrive in their social or business world.”

David Rock, Director and CEO, NeuroLeadership Institute—
“Heidi’s tone and smarts made this book impossible to put down.”

Scott Barry Kaufman, Scientific Director, Imagination Institute, Positive Psychology Center, University of Pennsylvania—
“Despite your best intentions, your perceptions of people are a mirage, contaminated by your past experiences, needs, and desires. This book will help you see yourself and others accurately—perhaps for the first time.”

Art Markman, Annabel Iron Worsham Centennial Professor of Psychology, University of Texas at Austin; author, Smart Thinking and Smart Change
“Heidi Grant Halvorson explores the fascinating research on personal perception. Not only will this book help you to present yourself more effectively, it will also allow you to see the people around you more accurately.”

Peter Bregman, CEO, Bregman Partners; author, 18 Minutes: Find Your Focus, Master Distraction, and Get the Right Things Done
“There are so many good reasons to read this book. It’s smart. It’s insightful. It’s helpful. But the best reason might just be that it’s fun. Heidi Grant Halvorson is a great writer—wise, knowledgeable, and charming at the same time. I found myself laughing while I was learning.”

Nilofer Merchant, author, 11 Rules for Creating Value in the Social Era
“There is deep power in knowing how to have people see you as only you are.”

David Burkus, author, The Myths of Creativity
“Being an authentic leader means being perceived authentically. Halvorson masterfully combines research and story to outline why we’re misunderstood and how to be seen for who we really are.”

Adam Grant, Class of 1965 Chaired Professor of Management, Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania; New York Times bestselling author, Give and Take
“This is a code book for deciphering one of the great riddles of life: why don’t others see us as we see ourselves? With fascinating facts and memorable examples, renowned psychologist Heidi Grant Halvorson shows us the path to making a better impression on others while maintaining a sense of integrity.”

Robert I. Sutton, Professor of Management Science and Engineering, Stanford University; author, The No Asshole Rule
“The best book ever written on why it is so difficult for us humans to communicate with others and what we can do about it. I was blown away by the masterful weave of stories, rock-solid evidence, and, especially, advice that I can use right now to get my message across without confusing or pissing off the other people in my life.”

I can’t say enough about how this book delivers a pivotal work, community and life lesson: Nurture your ideas and you can change the world. The story, gorgeously illustrated, takes a complex process and distills it in such a tender way so you will no longer be afraid of your most precious, earth-changing ideas. As an innovation coach for business and community leaders, this process of exploring, growing and freeing ‘out of the box’ ideas is usually a long-term process. In just a few beautifully illustrated pages, the book accomplishes what days and weeks of workshops try to. I am thrilled to be able to use it in my own work. A real treasure.
